Abstract:
Advances in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and related three-dimensional (3-D) software have facilitated the creation of 3-D and virtual environments for college and university campuses. The goal of this project was to develop a realistic 3-D visualization of the Haskell Indian Nations University campus in Lawrence, Kansas. With the aid of digital photographs and blueprints, all campus buildings were reconstructed with Sketch-Up Pro 5, a 3-D drawing package available from Google. Additional campus features in the visualization, including roads, sidewalks, fire hydrants, storm drains, manholes, stop signs, and light poles, were captured with GPS or through digitizing. The resulting 3-D visualization may be viewed in either Google Earth or ESRI's ArcScene, and will serve numerous purposes, such as student recruitment, acquainting potential visitors with the university prior to arrival, daily campus maintenance projects, and planning for future development of the university's facilities. Tips and lessons learned from the project will be shared with those interested in creating similar campus visualizations.
