Abstract:
"Crowdsourcing" of spatial information such as map databases is a new phenomenon under the "Neogeography" umbrella. In the realm of web-based mapping and personal navigation, Crowdsourcing encroaches on territory currently held by private map data vendors such as Tele Atlas -- one of the "Walled Gardens", in Open GIS parlance. This presentation reviews how private map database vendors maintain and distribute databases and describes how such companies are adapting crowdsourcing techniques to improve database currentness and accuracy.
