Abstract:
In recent decades, the wine industry has come to play a significant role in the economic development of Canada's Niagara Region. This has especially been the case as community leaders and other development actors have sought to diversify and expand the regional economy in response to the many challenges faced by other once-prominent industries that have been negatively impacted by various globalization forces, such as manufacturing and tourism. The purpose of this paper is to document the evolution of wine as an important part of local and regional economic development strategies in Niagara, as well as the various ways in which the wine industry is directly and indirectly tied to the region's economic fortunes.
