Abstract:
Ontario wine has become world renowned for high quality over the last 20 years. As a result, the industry has been growing at a rapid pace. As an industry that is closely reliant on the environment, it is important that it grows in a sustainable way. The purpose of this research is to understand the factors that influence implementation of environmental practices within the wine industry of southern Ontario. The study will build on past research in a variety of industries relating to what motivates and impedes organizations to increase their level of environmental commitment. This research also explores the current commitment level of Ontario wineries. Thirty-seven interviews with winemakers and winery owners throughout Ontario were conducted. A selection of various winery sizes, ownerships and regions were included. Preliminary results emphasize economic, social, product quality and personal values as primary factors involved in the decision to become more environmentally committed. The leading barriers cited include lack of awareness, time and finances. Understanding the barriers can help industry associations and governments direct their attention appropriately to assist the industries' continued healthy growth. The conclusions and recommendations of the research study will inform wineries of the various benefits that can be achieved from the implementation of environmental initiatives.
