Session Description: This panel will explore how to effectively teach qualitative methods, recognizing that a great deal of "teaching" (and mentoring) occurs outside of the classroom—in the realm of advising and/or during the research process itself. Questions that will provide a framework for the discussion include: 1) How can we effectively mentor students in the process of designing and conducting "rigorous" qualitative projects (rigorous being a highly contested term)? 2) How can we best help students through the difficult process of linking concrete research questions and techniques to what are often quite abstract theoretical debates? 3) In what ways is qualitative research itself a "learning process"? In other words, how do research questions and design change as a result of doing qualitative inquiry?
