Session Description: We are organizing a session on Qualitative Data and GIS. The session focuses on discussing various meanings of 'qualitative data' and its relationship with GIS. By pulling together diverse practices of integrating qualitative data and research with GIS, we would like to shed on light on how the interests of engaging GIS with the qualitative data and research has been increasing in recent years, and also discuss how geographers (both GIScientist and human geographers) have responded differently to this question. We encourage papers that consist not only case studies of current applications of integrating qualitative data with GIS, but also the broader epistemological, ontological, and ethical questions associated with combining qualitative data and GIS will be addressed in this session.

Paper topics may include:
•      Qualitative GIS: qualitative research and GIS
•      Qualitative inquiry, geographic visualization, exploratory data analysis
•      Progress in qualitative research and algorithm and model building, and data representation
•      Qualitative and spatial reasoning in GIScience research
•      Intersections or disjunctions between qualitative and GIScience epistemologies and theoretical underpinnings
•      Qualitative research and GIS software package integration
•      Impact of new popular geovisualization technologies (i.e. Google Mash-ups, , neogeography) on the integration of qualitative data or research and GIS
•      GIS and the construction of cartographic narratives, historical life maps, spatial stories
