The Air Force Culture and Language Center at Air University invites applications for a human geographer (specializing in cultural, regional, social geography or a related sub-field) with expertise in geographic information systems, proficiency in cartographic design, an interest in professional development and a strong background in cultural research. The successful candidate will contribute to the Center’s dynamic and inter-disciplinary Department of Cross-Cultural Competence. The Department is charged with strengthening the ability of all Air Force personnel to exert positive influence in culturally complex environments. This entails working across the numerous academic units of Air University, a post-secondary institution accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, and elements of the Air Force Expeditionary Training System.
The successful candidate’s primary role will be to integrate geographic perspectives regarding specific cultural landscapes to Air Force education and training that enhance Airmen’s general abilities to work effectively across cultures. The successful candidate will assist in the design, development and delivery of educational and training curriculum, provide guest lectures and co-teach graduate/undergraduate electives across Air University. Students include U.S. military personnel, members of allied armed forces and civilian employees. Previous teaching and/or training experience in professional contexts (e.g., international business, health care, diplomacy, etc.) is highly desirable. Prior military service and/or employment is advantageous, but not mandatory.
The position will also provide opportunities/funding to conduct/supervise groundbreaking geographic research related to cross-cultural competence. A solid background in research design and ethics is therefore beneficial. In addition, the successful candidate will be responsible for outreach to professional associations, academic institutions and military centers in the US and internationally through academic conferences and other scholarly activities.

The CORE (Common Operational Research Environment) Lab at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey California is searching for a Post Doc or Visiting Scholar in Geography. The CORE Lab’s mission is to educate and support U.S. and allied military personnel in the analytical craft of integrating geospatial, cultural, relational and temporal data as they relate to counter-insurgency, counter-terrorism, and stability operations.
The geography position requires familiarity with spatial analysis tools (ArcGIS/GeoDa/R) and participation in ongoing CORE Lab research. Preferences are given to those who can demonstrate how human and physical geography effect current military operations such as insurgency, urban warfare, and resource wars. The Association of American Geographers has an opening for the position of Senior Researcher at the AAG’s office in Washington, D.C.
We seek an individual with strong research and writing skills who can contribute to AAG research, education, and outreach projects, including new federally funded projects related to professional development, careers, and diversity. The Senior Researcher will participate in the development of research instruments and protocols; travel several times a year to collect data; lead professional development workshops; evaluate materials with students and faculty in participating departments; interact constructively with academic and non-academic employer organizations; assist in preparing manuscripts for publication; and assist with a variety of project management tasks. The Senior Researcher will also work closely with AAG staff to support other AAG initiatives, meetings, and proposals.
A highly qualified candidate will have a PhD in geography; possess strong skills in qualitative and quantitative methods in social science research, including interview and survey analysis, and knowledge of GIS and/or spatial analysis; possess outstanding written and verbal communication skills; be highly organized and able to meet deadlines on multiple projects, and have strong interpersonal skills.

The Department of Geosciences at Florida Atlantic University invites applications for a tenure track Assistant Professor to begin August 2010 at our main campus in Boca Raton. We seek an individual with a strong background in applying Remote Sensing techniques to the study of environmental resources or human-environment relationships. Preferred areas of expertise should include one or more of the following: hyperspectral remote sensing, photogrammetry, and LiDAR.
The Department offers undergraduate and master’s level degrees in both geography and geology, and a PhD degree in Geosciences, combining geography and geology to form specialty areas in hydrology and water resources, urban sustainability and cultural and spatial ecology. FAU is located in Southeastern Florida. The region’s geographic location with respect to sensitive ecosystems, combined with its rapidly growing population has put extreme stress on environmental resources. The Department of Geosciences and FAU’s interdisciplinary Environmental Sciences program are partnering with several state and federal agencies to address the region’s unique environmental problems and the successful candidate will have the opportunity to make a contribution to this partnership.

Assistant or Associate Professor of Geography – Medical Geography, University of Florida. The Department of Geography, University of Florida, seeks a Medical Geographer with specialty in Statistical and Spatial Epidemiology, at the rank of Assistant Professor. An appointment at the Associate Professor level is possible for a candidate demonstrating superior achievement in research and teaching. Applicants must have a PhD in Geography or related field, although ABD candidates will be considered if the receipt of their degrees will be achieved by the beginning of the appointment. Research expertise, evidence of scholarly publications, the ability to teach advanced undergraduate and graduate courses in topics covering basic Epidemiology, Disease Modeling and GIS for Public Health, and a commitment to funded research are required.
